Cataracts
How are cataracts treated?
In years past, cataract surgery was performed under general anesthesia requiring patients to stay in the hospital. Later advances used local anesthesia but still required an injection to the eye. While this procedure allows patients to return home the same day, visual recovery and healing time were still significant.
Today, with advances in techniques, topical anesthetics are used along with a mild sedative to help patients relax and to keep them comfortable during the procedure allowing for much faster recovery. The surgery is done on an out-patient basis usually taking less than two hours.
