Cataracts

How is the cloudy lens removed?

Ultrasound technology (phacoemulsification or "phaco") is used to remove the cataract. This technique places an incision in the cornea (clear front part of the eye) just next to the sclera (white part of the eye) where a very small probe will be inserted into the eye. The “phaco” probe breaks the lens up into tiny pieces and removes them via suction from the eye. Breaking the lens into tiny pieces is what allows Dr. Abel to make such a small incision in the eye which will not require sutures. After the cloudy lens is removed a new synthetic lens is inserted into the same place. This lens will be matched to the length of the patient’s eye in an effort to reduce or eliminate distance spectacle correction and will never cloud again.
