Preparation for PRK is virtually the same as LASIK. Removing the epithelium instead of generating a flap is the major difference in technique. The epithelium is removed by placing a ring on the cornea in which a mild alcohol solution in placed. This solution loosens the epithelium and allows for easy removal. Once the epithelium is removed, Dr. Abel will begin the laser treatment. After the laser completes the treatment, “bandage” contact lenses will be placed on the eye. Bandage contact lenses are soft lenses, with no prescription that allow the new epithelial cells to grow under the lens without disruption from the eye lids. Bandage lenses increase patient comfort during the healing process and are typically removed by your doctor around day 4 or 5 post surgery.
Generally, only one eye is treated at a time, since vision may be very blurry the first few days following PRK. This will allow the patient to remain functional and continue normal activities. The second eye is usually treated two weeks following the first procedure. Both eyes can be treated the same day if the patient has sufficient time to heal before resuming normal activities.
